What We Do: Coaching
1to1 Coaching is seen as an extremely important developmental tool. Individuals often leave a training course full of good intentions to try out new approaches in the office environment. However for a variety of reasons they fall back into the old patterns and behaviours.
Management or Executive Coaching is a practical process that supports individuals to tackle new behaviours and ideas in their day to day jobs. This is particularly important with senior managers working in high pressure environments - an "external" coach can provide a fresh outlook and stimulate the individual to tackle new challenges in a more productive style.
Psychometrics such as Firo-B and the SDI can be used to provide additional information that enables limiting behaviours to be identified and tackled. This enables individuals to manage their staff, peers and their boss more effectively.
Usually the first session is offered for free, since it is important to spend time establishing rapport and exploring the main issues.
The Process
1st session of 1 and a half to 2 hours
This is a very important session to clarify how coaching works and for both parties to get to know a bit about each other. By the end of this session the client should have come up with subjects to tackle on subsequent sessions)
A "contract" is agreed usually for a further 4 to 10 sessions booked into the diary
From session 2 onwards we start to tackle real issues identified by the client.
Coach in the workplace
Meetings would normally take place on "neutral ground", however sometimes the coach can sit in on team meetings to observe the client in action.
Our Experience
Lorna Young first started providing coaching in 2001 to managers of all levels within the BBC and was instrumental in kick-starting the internal Management Coaching system.
The creation of the BBC Leadership Programme, in conjuction with Ashridge, resulted in Lorna having clients around the UK in Senior and Middle Management positions.
L A Young occasionally uses Associate Coaches, all of whom have extensive experience and have been carefully selected.
